Children's Vitamin and Mineral SupplementsIt can be very difficult to persuade children to take supplements: most children dislike the strong flavor of cod liver oil, for example, and it is better to give them a vitamin and mineral supplement especially designed for their age group instead. An exciting array of pleasant flavored vitamin pastilles, chewable tablets and drops are now available. Some research suggests that one in two pre-school children aged 18 months to four and half years get less vitamin A than they need, and that one in 12 pre-school children are lacking in iron. As children are growing rapidly, it is vital that they get all the vitamins and minerals they need. Guidelines recommended that children should receive supplements of vitamins A and D from the age of six months until at least two and preferably five years, unless their diet is known to provide good amounts. Diet should always come first however, and the family should aim to eat as healthily as possible. Encourage little ones to eat at least five servings of fruit and vegetables per day.
